This year’s Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show was very much focused on conserving water. The country is in the middle of a major drought, so emphasis was placed on how to create sustainable gardens using drought-tolerant plants and water-saving products. Recycled water was used in all water features, and after the event the water was applied to thirsty trees or used to fill empty ponds. Even Melbourne’s Olympic sized swimming pool that hosted the World Swimming Championships the same week was to be emptied and used to water the city’s historic trees and fill the lake at the Royal Botanic Gardens. That’s not to say the show lacked colour. There was plenty of vibrancy – as you can see in our supplement starting on page 19. And the floral designs were as grand and colourful as ever. The design below, by Gantcho of Melbourne, was just one of many enormous floral designs that attracted hundreds of inspired showgoers. We hope you find something that inspires you in our eight-page supplement. I’m off home to see if I can whip up a fabulous floral design myself, albeit on a smaller scale. Happy gardening.
